The material sucked up by THSD “Gino Cucco” is a mixture of sand and water; the sand granule part which will sediment on hopper bottom is deprived of the most subtle elements, including silt and clay, which hanging are then spilled out in the sea throughout lateral blowholes (overflow system).
This is a great advantage for land reclamation because, speaking in granulometric terms, the material suctioned by the dredger will have a value of D50 very high in respect of that made with different techniques because a big part of subtle elements is discharged.
